FILLING INGREDIENTS
- 3/4 lb. chopped dates
- 1/3 C. sugar
- 1/3 C. water
- 1/2 C. chopped nuts
Cook first three ingredients in saucepan until slightly thickened Stir constantly. Remove from heat. Stir in 1/2 C. chopped nuts.
DOUGH INGREDIENTS
- 1/2 C. shortening
- 1 C. brown sugar, firmly packed
- 1 egg
- 1/2 tsp. vanilla
- 1 3/4 C. flour
- 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1/4 tsp. salt
Mix shortening, sugar, egg and vanilla thoroughly. Measure flour, soda and salt. Mix together. Divide dough in half. Roll each piece of dough on wax paper (11×7″). Spread dough with filling. Roll up tightly beginning at wide side. Pinch to seal. Wrap in wax paper and chill several hours. Cut in 1/4″ slices. Bake at 400 degrees on lightly greased baking sheet for 10 mins.
